About Sitemaps
Sitemaps are text or XML files that are used to inform search engines about URL's on websites that are available to crawl. Some other page information can be included such as when the page was last updated and it's importance within the site. This information then allows the search engines to crawl your site more effectively.
Sitemaps are especially useful for notifying search engines of content available on your site that is not easily crawlable. Sitemaps are used to include content for crawling, to exclude your content from crawling, use robots.txt.
Sitemaps can be submitted to search engines, including Google, Yahoo, Ask and Bing. Submitting a sitemap to these search engines does not guarantee that they will index your content.
Sitemaps are limited to 50,000 pages per sitemap. Though a single site can have multiple sitemaps.
